#3 mr cool universal heat pump fail update
this is a update on the mr cool universal furnace heat pump 36k model. came into to do a manual defrost by running the unit in AC mode for 30 minutes to removes INCHES of solid ice from the unit. unit does do its defrosts but they are insufficient as one can see.
after this clean up we ran the unit and it was pulling a peak of 3.6-3.9kw of energy in the 36k mode. per the mr cool info sheet this specific unit in the 36k mode only gives 36000btu of heat up to 17f. it was 16f when we finished defrosting the unit so it had a clean outdoor coil and breathed copious amounts of air through the outdoor coil. so using 3.9kw of elec snd giving out 36000btu of heat into the house as per mr cools specs which they don't give to much it means the COP of this unit at 17f giving 36kbtu of heat is around 2.7k per each 1kw used which is actually very efficient right on par with small wall mount units. so if it would be able to defrost properly then its a decent unit other then really lacking on heating power as the temperature drops. mr rates this unit giving only 24k btu of heat at -5f.
Most cold climate heat pumps try to maintain their rated heating capacity to 0f Temps. the LG 42k hhv units gives out 44k of heat at -5f for comparison which is more then rated cap so it has great potential for larger homes.
as stated above this mr cool unit would not pull for then 3.9kw of elec af 17f but it was definitely putting out the rated 36k of heat because you could not hold you hand for more then one second on the hot suction line. it wouldn't get much more warmer then that since if would start to melt the insulation if it was hotter. this is weird because the unit has ability to pull around 5.7kw of elec in the 36k mode but it only pulled 3.9kw now mind you that was with a clean outdoor coil. so the unit stopped try to pump put more heat even though it had more rang to ramp up. now when the unit was frozen over it pull 5kw of elec because it couldn't breath through the ice so it had to work harder.
what I'm saying is if this unit has no hiccups it will work for a 1000sqft home MAX to be safe in the upstate NY climate. if you have a bigger home get the 48k or 60k model. the 48k gives 48k btu of heat down to 14f so thats good heat.
