On January 23, 1960 the U.S Navy Bathyscaphe Trieste descended to a depth of 35, 800 feet and returned back to the surface ship. In 1993 the Japanese sent down the remote submersible Kaiko to a depth of 35, 798 feet. She spent just over a half hour down there before suffering mechanical problems.
