10 Gateway HEAVY METAL Bands

Some may say they were born into heavy metal, but most of us discovered it on our own. Those early bands helped the roots take hold and turned us into long-standing metal ambassadors. But what are some bands that are easy to approach that could leave a newcomer with a sense of metal's musical power? These 10 are great examples, including 3 of CKN's personal gateway bands.

Some of these groups help because of the 'ripple effect' that is mentioned often in this video. The ripple effect can be defined in this context as a band who's membership, scene affiliation (not scene music, mind you) and peer base can create a vast world of music for a listener to explore. As an example: METALLICA can ripple effect a listener toward FLOTSAM AND JETSAM (Jason Newstead's previous band), the BIG 4 and THRASH METAL (Dave Mustaine's membership, Kirk and Cliff came from Exodus and Trauma) EARLY OCCULT METAL (Mercyful Fate medley, other covers), NEW WAVE OF BRITISH HEAVY METAL (Budgie, Diamond Head, etc covers) and even PUNK music (Misfits cover) among others.
