Atukula Upma (Poha) is one of the most popular Indian breakfasts or snacks made of flattened rice, otherwise popularly known as poha. Kanda Poha is an easy, scrumptious version of the recipe, and many enjoy the simplicity and taste. Light, filling, and mouthwatering, it perfectly adds variety to daily meals. When you don't feel like cooking much, Kanda Poha is a great option that does not require much of anything: onions, potatoes, lemon juice, and curry leaves.

The term poha (or pohe in plural) can be used to describe the ingredient itself, flattened rice, or the dish prepared from it. Poha are rice flakes, also known as beaten rice, made by de-husking and parboiling rice grains, which are then dried, roasted, and flattened with iron rollers. Flattened rice is widely used in popular dishes like poha, Chudoba, kheer, and Ladoo.

Poha in India is known by other names in different parts of the country: avalakki in Kannada, aval in Tamil, chirer in Bengali, and so on. There are two popular varieties of white poha that are widely used across India. Poha is a popular breakfast or snack item, easy to make and eaten with great versatility.

Generally, poha is a dish prepared with fried pieces of small chopped onions along with some spices containing mustard seeds, green chilies, and curry leaves mixed with the soft flattened rice along with some roasted peanut. The dish would usually culminate in being garnished with lemon juice along with fresh coriander, coconut, and a range of other poha variation dishes like Kanda Poha, Batata Poha, Vegetable Poha, and Masala Poha.

Today, I am sharing with you a recipe for Atukula Upma. Kanda means onions, batata means potatoes, and poha refers to flattened rice. Therefore, this version of poha features onions and potatoes as the main ingredients. Hence, it is Kanda Batata Poha, or Kanda Batata Pohe.
