Leon Perera questions relevance of policies from the 90s during Singapore Parliament debate on GST
During the debate on the Singapore President Speech in Parliament on Friday, Mr Murali Pillai, the Member of Parliament for Bukit Batok SMC, sought clarification from Mr Leon Perera regarding his mention of the Workers Party's position on accepting the GST at 7% in 2018.
Mr Pillai stated, "My interest lies in the Workers Party's position from 1993, when the GST bill was first introduced, up until today, and I have checked the Hansard for this information."
He then asked Mr Perera, "Can you please clarify when and where the Workers Party articulated its position on the GST?"
Mr Perera, the MP for Aljunied GRC, responded by saying, "As I mentioned earlier, during the parliamentary debates in 2018, we opposed the hike of GST from 7% to 9%. However, at no point in those debates did we call for the GST to be lowered from 7% to 0%."
He also highlighted that Mr Pillai had referred to positions taken by the Workers Party in the 1990s and questioned the relevance of debating positions from 30 years ago.
Furthermore, Mr Perera pointed out that he could similarly bring up policies and positions taken by the People's Action Party in the 1990s for discussion, such as the graduate mothers policy and votes for upgrading.
Mr Perera emphasized that since the idea of a GST hike from 7% to 9% was proposed in 2018, no member of the Workers Party has called for the GST to be lowered from 7% to 0%. He invited Mr Pillai to provide evidence or references to support his claim if there were any.
