Stories from Deep America

In this video, peasant farmers of Puno and Cuzco in Peru and Cochabamma in Bolivia share aspects of their agricultural knowledge, including a summoning ritual for fallow land, reading signs in nature for knowing when to turn over the soil, observing sprouts on stored potatoes to determine planting times, traditional methods of insuring a good potato crop, tasks related to caring for a chacra (cultivated field), ways of storing seeds, and how to make a local potato based food called chuno. It provides insights into the agrocentric lifestyle of peoples living in the High Andes, and many of the points illustrated in this video are considered as 'secrets' and ought to be treated with the utmost respect. Made in 2004 by PRATEC, a Lima based NGO, and presented in Spanish with custom English subtitles commissioned by Multiversity.
