Truma RV Water Heater Install
We've had issues with our old water heater since we got this coach last November, it did not provide consistent hot water, and required excess water to be flowing to stabilize the water temperature. We have planned on replacing it later, but I accelerated that process. After a careful review of the available options, that is other instant on or tankless water heaters, we decided the Truma system, an Aqua Comfort model, would provide us withe best alternative.
We are not totally sold on the idea of an instant or tankless water heater because, while they claim requiring less propane, that is at somewhat incomplete comparison. While I don't doubt that they use less propane than a tank type water heater when it is using propane as the heat source. The other side of that is most tank type water heaters can run solely on electrical power and use no propane in that mode. As discussed in the video, it was not a viable option to install a tank type heater due to the weight difference.
While we've only had the Truma for two days, it has been a very successful transition. It truly delivers hot water much better and more consistently than the previous style instant on heater. The temperature coming from the unit is a very consistent temperature. Terribly important is that, while it is very quick, these devices do not start the heating process "instantly". There is a short delay from the time you open the faucet until the controls can recognize the water flow and fire up the propane burner. Then the hot water still has to transit through the pipes to get to the user. With the Truma, there is a small internal tank so once the water flow starts, if you interrupt it for a short time such as shutting the water off to take a "navy" shower, then turn it back on, the residual hot water in that small tank is sufficient to keep the water hot while the burner comes back on. In short, this water heater delivers its promise of instant hot water and does it in such a way as to not have a shot of cold water before the hot water starts again.
