Historic moment: Bhutan linked by rail to India for first time — ₹4,033 cr investment
In a landmark announcement, India and Bhutan have committed to constructing their first-ever cross-border railway links, bringing Bhutan into India’s railway grid. The Kokrajhar-Gelephu line (69 km, Assam-Bhutan) will cost about ₹3,456 crore and be done in 4 years, while the Banarhat-Samtse route (20 km, West Bengal-Bhutan) will cost ₹577 crore and be completed in 3 years.

These lines fall under India’s infrastructure push and “Make in India” strategy, aimed at strengthening trade, tourism, and strategic connectivity. Gelephu is being developed as a mindfulness city and Samtse as an industrial town. The new rail corridors will facilitate faster movement of goods, passengers and reduce transport costs for Bhutan’s exports via Indian ports. The project includes bridges, viaducts and multiple underpasses and overpasses, reflecting complex engineering across terrain.
