The Battle of Leipzig (1945) – The Last American Battle in Germany during World War II

The Battle of Leipzig (1945) is another forgotten WW2 battle during the Allied conquest of Western Germany near the end of the Second World War in Europe. It was one of the last WW2 battles the Americans fought in Europe. German police commander Wilhelm von Grolmann wanted to surrender. Colonel Hans von Poncet wanted to fight on. A battle followed after which the German troops made their last stand in an iconic monument. Hans Trefousse was an American translator who helped with the surrender of the final troops.
