Alan Yentob, one of Britain's most influential voices in arts broadcasting and a defining creative force within the BBC, has passed away at the age of 78.

Over a career that spanned decades, Yentob became a familiar and trusted face to audiences across the UK. Through acclaimed television series such as Omnibus, Arena, and Imagine, he profiled and conversed with some of the most important cultural and creative icons of our time. His interviews and documentaries offered rare insight into the minds of legendary figures such as David Bowie, Maya Angelou, Charles Saatchi, and Grayson Perry, among many others. Yentob didn’t just document their stories—he captured their essence.

Beyond his work on screen, Yentob held several key leadership roles within the BBC. He served as controller of both BBC One and BBC Two, and also held the positions of Creative Director and Head of Music and Arts. His influence helped shape the broadcaster’s artistic direction for generations. Known for his vision and fearless approach, he championed bold storytelling and gave a platform to voices that might otherwise have gone unheard.

Paying tribute to her late husband, Philippa Walker shared a deeply personal portrait of Yentob, calling him “curious, funny, annoying, late, and creative in every cell of his body.” She added with great affection, “He was the kindest of men.”

BBC Director-General Tim Davie also honored Yentob’s legacy, describing him as “a creative force and cultural visionary” who consistently championed “originality, risk-taking, and artistic ambition.” Davie remarked, “To work with Alan was to be inspired and encouraged to think bigger. He had a rare gift for identifying talent and lifting others up—a mentor and champion to so many across the worlds of television, film, and theatre.” He concluded by noting that Yentob’s passion “wasn’t performative—it was personal. He believed in the power of culture to enrich, challenge, and connect us.”
