Web Event — Meritocracy and its discontents: A book event with Michael J. Sandel | LIVE STREAM
On the populist right and the activist left, Western politics over the past five years has been upended by rebellions against its meritocratic establishment: the credentialed elite. In his new book, “The Tyranny of Merit: What’s Become of the Common Good?” (Macmillan, 2020), famed Harvard philosopher Michael Sandel argues these revolts are responses to a meritocratic system that breeds hubris among its winners while excluding its losers. The result is that the tyranny of meritocracy leaves societies unhappier, more unequal, and more divided.
Please join AEI for a discussion between AEI’s Ross Douthat and Dr. Sandel about a possible alternative to the tyranny of merit, rooted in the ancient concept of the common good.
