NT government prohibits media access to Don Dale Youth Detention Centre
The Northern Territory government has prohibited media access to the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre.
The ban was implemented after the government announced plans to house female adult inmates at the facility once the youth detainees were moved out later this year.
Since coming to power in 2016, the Labor government had promised to shut down the condemned facility once a new detention centre was built.
Darwin barrister John Lawrence has called for the media to be “allowed in there” as there is “no good reason” why the community shouldn’t be shown what’s inside.
A spokesperson for the NT government has reasoned a consultation with the inmates and the disruption of their routines lead to the ban.
Mr Lawrence however believes it is a cover up, telling Sky News Australia “if you saw it, you would be shocked and appalled”.
