Dry brush inking

Here I am shading a portrait of Matthew Hewitt for my new little book on black bears in the Big Bend. Matt studies bears for the Borderlands Research Institute.

I am doing dry-brush inking here with a flat bristle brush (designed for oil paint). This is a new approach to dry brush for me that works amazingly well.

Before, I would have to kind of mess up my main inking watercolor round brush to spread out the tip – or used an old, beat-up one. But the stiffness of the bristle brush is just perfect for these kinds of marks. I am surprised it never occurred to me before!
