Gun Camera Film of Forrest Fenn

My War For Me is a short essay written by Forrest that can be found on the internet and in Forrest's book: The Thrill of the Chase

Gun cameras are used in combat aircraft to record the effectiveness of weapons systems. Forrest collected his gun camera film from Vietnam and one day in 2014, forty-six years after his tour in Vietnam ended, I sat down with him to watch his reel. The conversation you hear is Forrest and myself as we view the film. Forrest allowed me to record the discussion and allowed me to copy his gun camera film under one rule. The rule being that I would not release the film or our conversation until after Forrest was gone.

I know Forrest was proud of his record as a combat fighter pilot but I also believe Forrest was, in hindsight, often disheartened by his active involvement in civilian casualties, deaths and community destruction. Sometimes a veteran can shut those feelings away for a few years or even a few decades. This torn, fated outcome is not uncommon among combat pilots in that war and is still common today, despite improved accuracy in weapons delivery systems and advanced training.

I believe that Forrest would be content today knowing that many of those who watch this film will recognize the appalling destruction of these weapons but will also come to see the desire for world peace voiced by many who have experienced both the militaristic pride and the humanitarian regret associated with combat veterans.
