Itchy Black Bear with hairloss

Dr. Rebecca Mount, one of our veterinary dermatology residents, collects samples from a black bear while he is getting ready for surgery on a broken elbow. This bear is one of many at a wildlife rescue facility in New Mexico. They have had an outbreak of mites and many bears have hairloss, crusting and severe itching. Dr. Mount collected skin scraping to try to identify the mites, skin cultures to determine the type of bacterial infection and skin biopsies to identify the pattern of inflammation.
