Best OBS Settings for Recording 2026 – NO LAG

In this tutorial I show you the best OBS Settings for recording 2026. Throughout the video I cover all of the output and video settings you need to record in various resolutions. This ensures you can record in the best quality for 4K, 1440p, and 1080p. Additionally, I showcase some alternative settings in-case your PC doesn’t have our recommended settings. These settings aim to get high quality recordings while trying to keep the file size lower than needed. You can adjust the settings to favour smaller file sizes if you want, however, this is at the expense of the video quality.

The most important OBS recording settings are the output settings, which control the quality and file size. In OBS the output settings also include the encoder settings which will need to be adjusted to your system. For example, if your recordings are lagging then you will want to adjust the encoder settings to stop your recordings from lagging. Often, changing the Present encoder setting can help you record without lag in OBS. However, if you are looking for the best OBS settings for recording on a low-end pc then you may want to adjust even more settings, and record in a slightly lower quality.

Another important recording setting is the video encoder. At the moment the best video encoder is either the NVIDIA NVENC H.264, or AMD HW H.264 options. Both of these use your graphics card to encode your video, taking stress off your CPU and improving your performance when gaming. However, you may also have access to the NVIDIA NVENC H.265 or AMD HW H.265 video encoder, which are arguably better. Although these video encoders do allow for better video quality with lower file size, the files aren’t as supported as H.264. Because of this you may experience some lag when trying to edit the videos, or your default media player may not be able to play the video files.

The best rate control for OBS is Constant QP or CQP, which allows for constant high quality for OBS recordings. When using Constant QP you can adjust the recording quality using the Constant QP setting. The lower the number the higher quality the video will be, but the larger the file size. If you want the highest recording quality then you can use 16 or 17. However, for a smaller file size you can use 19 or 20. Because of the added resolution of 1440p and 4K recordings you will typically want to set Constant QP to 19 or 20 to reduce the file size..

Alternatively, you can use Constant bitrate or CBR, which is another good option. With constant bitrate the higher the bitrate the better quality the recording will be. However, this is a rate of quality, meaning you will want to increase the bitrate if you’re recording in 1440p or 4K. When recording with CBR you’ll want to use at least 20000 for 1080p recordings, 35000 for 1440p recordings, and 50000 for 4K recordings.

Additionally, if you are trying to get the best OBS recording settings for gameplay then you may need to adjust your settings to match. Unfortunately, recording can impact your game performance, or your recordings may lag when trying to record gameplay. Fortunately, there are a few recording settings that you can adjust to try improve performance.

A good practice when setting up your OBS recording settings is to setup hotkeys. With recording hotkeys you can start and stop recording your screen without having to open the OBS window. This is particularly helpful if you’re recording gameplay.

If you’re getting any lag, then you will need to adjust some of your settings. One option is to lower the quality of your recordings. If you are using CBR as your rate control then you will need to lower the bitrate. However, if you’re using Constant QP then you will want to increase the Constant QP slightly. Additionally, you can adjust the Preset, Tuning, and Multiphases Mode.

For the best OBS recording settings on low end PC you will want to set the preset to P4: Medium. This will often solve issues with laggy videos when recording with OBS.

The best format for Recording in OBS is MKV or MP4, depending on the situation. When recording longer videos MKV is typically the best as it won’t corrupt if OBS were to crash. However, using MKV will require you to convert the videos to MP4 to allow you to edit and use the video freely. This can be done in OBS through the remux feature, manually or automatically.
