Flying-fox and her twins: Riki, Velcro and Klingon
6 weeks ago Riki, an adult female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was found hanging off a glass pool fence. She had twins on her.
Twins are uncommon in flying-foxes - mum bat is unable to raise twins and usually the weaker twin drops off in the first few weeks.
Riki had hit her head and knocked herself silly.
Riki's twins - Velcro and Klingon - were removed from her while she was so concussed. She didn't really even notice.
I cared for the twins for a few days, then a reunion was attempted.
The twins both climbed onto Riki and that was that. Riki just enfolded them and life continued.
However, Riki was still dealing with the effects of quite a severe closed head injury, and wasn't managing, so the decision was made to remove Velcro, the smaller of the 2 babies, and hand raise her.
Riki is managing her larger twin well - and she and Klingon are in an aviary with other bats.
Riki still has a marked neurological injury but is slowly improving.
Babies are named by their carers. Velcro was renamed Ruby Tuesday by her new carer. Klingon remains on his mum and is still called Klingon.
This video update is courtesy of the twins' carers:
Thanks M and Fiona for the footage and update, and for caring for these 3.
