Celebrating National Mining Day

National Mining Day November 22

As we get ready to celebrate National Mining and Related Industries Day we thank the 1 million hard-working Australians who contributed to the mining industry and remind those to be proud of the high standards of living the mining industry generates for Australia.

The National Day was founded in 2013 by the Executive Chairman of Hancock Group, Mrs Gina Rinehart AO, to recognise the contribution mining makes to our nation, our cities, towns and families across the country.

Iron ore and coal are the country's largest exports, valued at $146 billion. The Australian mining and energy sector accounted for 21% of Australia's GDP growth and 75% of Australia's goods exports. From 2005 to 2018, the resources sector invested approximately $720 billion in Australia, 40% of all investments.

Mining and related industries are at the forefront of underpinning Australia's living standards. Since 2005, direct employment in the resources sector has more than doubled, and in May 2019, there were 247,000 people employed by the mining sector.

If we consider its related industries, over one million Australians owe their livelihoods to mining, with many others benefiting too, and today we celebrate this contribution to the industry.
