Russia Sends Upgraded T-90M and T-80BVM Tanks With Anti-Drone Armor

Russia is rapidly redesigning its armored warfare strategy in response to the explosive rise of FPV drone warfare in Ukraine. Modernized T-90M Proryv, T-80BVM, and T-72B3M tanks are now appearing with factory-installed anti-drone protection systems designed specifically to counter top-attack FPV threats. Unlike the improvised “cope cages” seen earlier in the war, these newer systems — including the Romashka and Yozh protection structures — are integrated survival packages combining cage armor, cable entanglement systems, electronic warfare jammers, reactive armor, and layered defensive measures.
The Ukraine war has exposed how cheap FPV drones can destroy heavily armored vehicles by striking weak rooftop sections, turret rings, optics, and engine compartments. In response, Russia has shifted toward mass modernization of existing Soviet-era tanks rather than relying on expensive next-generation platforms like the T-14 Armata. The battlefield is increasingly becoming a contest between armored survivability and mass-produced autonomous drones, forcing militaries worldwide to rethink the future of tank warfare. The conflict highlights a larger transformation in military doctrine, where adaptability, electronic warfare, and counter-drone protection may become more important than traditional armor thickness alone.
