About Alphafold - An Awesome AI Invention That Will Change The Course of Medicine

Hear Tumblehome's AI expert Barnas talk/rant about how important the Alphafold 2 invention is, and why it's critical to the future of medicine. Learn about the science of genes vs proteins, and why the task of automating protein folding is complicated, but necessary to create vaccines and future cures for major medical issues like cancer. AI is solving today's biggest problems and it is important that more young students learn it and understand its power. Not just to learn how to use AI fix the world's problems, but how to use AI wisely and safely.

This is a general talk geared toward teachers who want to give real world examples of AI related science advances to their students, and/or more advanced high school students who have some exposure to biology or basic science concepts.

X-Ray crystallography is a tool used for identifying the atomic and molecular structure of a crystal. The movement of the machine during 80 second scan can give different view on how relatively slow scientific measurements can look frozen in time by shutter speed of 90 seconds.

About:
Crystal structure of the soluble peridinin-chlorophyll-protein complex from the photosynthetic dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae. This complex is found in many photosynthetic dinoflagellates and involves a boat or cradle-shaped protein with two pseudosymmetrical repeats of eight alpha helices (shown in blue and orange) wrapped around a pigment-filled central cavity. Each eight-helix segment binds one chlorophyll molecule (green, with central magnesium ion shown as a green sphere), one diacylglycerol molecule (yellow) and four peridinin molecules (gray). Rendered using PyMol from PDB ID 1PPR. Hofmann E, Wrench PM, Sharples FP, Hiller RG, Welte W, Diederichs K. Structural basis of light harvesting by carotenoids: peridinin-chlorophyll-protein from Amphidinium carterae. Science. 1996;272(5269):1788-91. DOI 10.1126/science.272.5269.1788.
