Quick Facts:
• 8th Studio Album released in December 1967.
• #303 on Rolling Stones Top 500 Albums of All-Time
• Named after Texas outlaw John Wesley Hardin, whose name was misspelled.
• Very well received by critics and sold well, #2 in US, #1 in UK, which was remarkable considering that Dylan had kept Columbia from releasing the album with much promotion or publicity.
Produced by Bob Johnston, it marked his return to semi-acoustic instrumentation and folk-influenced songwriting after 3 albums of lyrically abstract, blues-tinged rock music.
Dylan went to work on John Wesley Harding in the fall of 1967. By then, 18 months had passed since the completion of Blonde on Blonde. After recovering from the worst of the results of his motorcycle accident, Dylan spent a substantial amount of time recording the informal basement sessions in NY. However, none of these songs appear anywhere from these recordings including bootlegs.
There are more than 60 biblical allusions over the course of the 38 ½ minute album.

Side one
1. John Wesley Harding - Dylan has said that he did not have a clear notion of what the song was about.

2. As I Went Out One Morning - 2:49, Lyrics tell about a man who offers a hand to a woman in chains, but realizes that she wants more than he is offering, and that "she meant to do [him] harm.

3. I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine -

4. All Along the Watchtower - Is strongly identified with the interpretation Jimi Hendrix recorded for the album Electric Ladyland with the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

5. The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest - 11 verses, longest song on album, without chorus, bridge, or a refrain to vary its structure. Instrumentation is very sparse.

6. Drifter's Escape - , Dylan wrote on a train in New York while traveling to the 1st session for the album. Lyrics provide a narrative in which an outsider is oppressed by society, but not defeated. The protagonist is put on trial without knowing what the charges against him are.

Side two
1. Dear Landlord - sung by a narrator pleading for respect and equal rights.

2. I Am a Lonesome Hobo - Lyrics tell of the typical riches to rags tradition.

3. I Pity the Poor Immigrant - Every verse of the song introduces this “immigrant” for which Dylan portrays as one with power and ability but who misuses it.

4. The Wicked Messenger - Features a repetitive descending bass line that carries the song. Lyrics have their origins in the Bible.

5. Down Along the Cove - 1st verse him thankful for her, 2nd verse her thankful for him, 3rd and last verse them walking together.

6. I'll Be Your Baby Tonight –

Faves – I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine, I Pity The Immigrant, All Along the Watchtower, The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest

Overall – Trey - 8.0/10, Shawn 7.75 /10
