Islas Canarias is a Spanish archipelago of seven islands in the Atlantic Ocean near the northwest coast of the African continent. Also known as the Canary Islands. The entire island constitutes the Canary Islands Autonomous Region.
The distance from the nearest Moroccan Kingdom on the continent is about 100-500 km. The Canary Islands is said to be Hawaii in the Atlantic Ocean.
It derives from the Latin name "Insula Canaria" for Gran Canaria.
After that, it became a plural form of "Canary Islands" meaning the whole island. The state coat of arms depicts a pair of dogs spread across seven islands.
It is a volcanic island protruding from the Atlantic floor at a depth of at least 2,000 m and formed by the hotspot action of underground magma from the Cretaceous. It is an island isolated from the continent, and because it was not affected by the glaciers that covered the entire European continent and the northern tip of Africa, it is home to many endemic species.
It is considered to be a very important area for environmental protection.

Several species and ecosystems are protected, including the protozoan dragon blood tree and Laurisilva, a type of evergreen forest. Laurisilva in Garajonay National Park at the top of the island of La Gomera is a World Heritage Site.

The climate is classified into subtropical and desert. Surrounded by the sea, it is relatively mild due to the trade winds, and annual precipitation is low at around 200 mm.

Four of the 13 national parks in Spain are in the Canary Islands.
