Fox Predator Problems & Possible Another Much Bigger Predator Now #52 Hatching Ducklings Ducks
--------------------------------------------
It was a late start today, I slept in a touch and just needed to slow my pace down a touch which ended up biting me on the rear later in the day, my day ended much later than normal because of my late start.
Today I'm putting in 63 Muscovy duck eggs into the hatcher so I have to get it all cleaned out and washed down inside, the mess inside is so much worse because of the holes I put in the hatcher trays it really help spread the mess around inside instead of being contained in the trays.
Ducklings in the barn get their 2nd kiddie pool today, they are getting bigger and need more room pretty soon they'll be with the rest of the flock outside, this batch will be outside much sooner than the other batch.
While I was working in the barn cleaning it out the ducklings were coming into the barn which is very strange as normally when I'm working in there they don't come inside, unbeknown to me less 15 minutes later I was going to find out why.
Finished cleaning the barn out and filming Dug in the entrance of the barn and started to head up to the house, the adult ducks started to go nuts and panic right when I came around the barn corner there was the fox right in front of the pen. I doubled back to the barn to get the video camera, normally I would just shoot it with the shotgun but the shotgun was at the house not with me in the barn. I got a clear view of him running back into the tall grass beside the pen, it didn't look like the fox that I saw in the swamp it was a much smaller one and it looked like it had mange.
Chicken Dug and I with the shotgun went for a walk into the bush to see if I could catch a shot at it, no luck but I did find his trails through my property that he is using to come and go to hunt the ducks.
Another new curve ball I was talking to my neighbour across the road and he was telling me that there was a cougar killing about 6 kms down the road from me, 2 calves were killed and the Ministry of Natural Resources officer confirmed it was a cougar kill. And this morning there were new tracks down by the compost pile that didn't belong to a fox or Dug, but they didn't look like a cougar paw mark either but who knows with the Duck Adventure luck we could end up having a cougar problem also.
Less than 90 minutes later the fox showed up again while I was on the back deck washing all the hatcher parts, the ducks freaked and I looked up and there he was, he was gone faster than I could get the safety off the shotgun.
This stress from the fox is really destroying egg production, the ducks are producing less than 50% of what they should be producing right now, it's freaking the adult ducks and the young ducks out completely and it sending me over the edge, I want that fox dead so bad...
While I was moving the 63 Muscovy eggs to the hatcher one of the Muscovy eggs was pipping out of the shell, this is 3 days early it's only day 32 they aren't suppose to start till day 35.
I set up in the window of my bedroom to get a sniper shot at the fox, set up a small target to make sure the 22 calibre rifle was hitting in the right spot since I sighted the rifle in to 50 yards and this shot is only 30 yards so to make sure I know where it was hitting before I took my more than likely only shot I'm going to get at the fox I wanted to make sure first.
When I had everything set up to take my practice shot the fox showed up again and freaked out the ducks but I never got a view of him, he must have stayed in the long grass and the ducks could either smell him or hear him.
Around 6 pm I was in the barn cleaning out and feeding the ducklings and the ducks came into the barn again, the fox had returned to the property but was staying out of my sight again. The poor ducklings don't want to leave the inside of the safety of the barn, everyone is stressed over this fox he's got to go.
I got all my chores done really early so I could sit in the bedroom window and wait for this sneaking fox, but he never showed up again.
