$50.4 billion African Highway Construction 584km~ Harare to Beitbridge Dualling | Zimbabwe

The Harare Beitbridge project is part of the 930km Beitbridge Chirundu project. The construction of the highway is expected to improve the quality of the road, which has outlived its lifespan. The old road was completed in the early 1970s with a life span of 20years. So the road should have already been replaced in the 1990s.
Upon completion, the total project will cost between ZW$50 to 55billion Zimbabwe dollars… which in USD is between 600 to 650 million United States dollars. The road will be built entirely by local Zimbabwean registered companies
In 2016 Austrian contractor Geiger International was awarded the tender to build the road, but could not follow through with the project. Geiger was supposed to build at a cost of US$1.9 billion, so by making use of local contractors the government will save approximately 1.3billion United States dollars.
The construction involves widening the existing lanes to meet current standards but the contractors will have to remove the existing the existing road, improve the base layers and then pave new asphalt on top.

The project is divided into 2 phases
Under Phase One of the project, the highway will be expanded from the present 7 metres to 12.5 metres width in line with the Southern Africa Transport and Communications standards.
The stretch from Harare to Beatrice will be completely dualised, then 20km before Chivhu and 20km after, and another 20km before Masvingo 20km after, and lastly 20km from Beitbridge. This phase is expected to be complete in 2022.
Phase Two of the project will see the dualisation of the entire 584km road.
The Zimbabwe Government has awarded five local companies to carry out the project. The five firms are; Bitumen World, Fossil Contractors, Exodus Company, Masimba Construction and Tensor Systems. The companies have exhibited great workmanship which is expected to see the road being navigable for the next 20 years. Rebuilding the route is expected to help boost Zimbabwe’s economy while also cutting death toll.
The old road was 7m wide, however the new road is being widened to a width of 12,5m, with 2 lanes of 3,75 m width and 2,5m wide surfaced shoulders. Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway project will result in Zimbabwe leveraging its central geographical location in SADC to become a regional logistics hub.
Today I will end in Chikomba district. I will show you the other part of the road indifferent videos since it’s 584km long.
