- Don't make empty promises like "it won't happen again".
- Don't tell them they are overreacting or try to control their emotions.
- Don't get defensive, make excuses, minimize, or blame them.
- Don't ignore their pain or pretend everything is fine.
- Don't claim you know exactly how they feel.
- Don't shame them for their reactions.
- Don't bring up their negative behavior after they flood.
List of things to do include:
- Do listen actively to understand their pain without judgment.
- Do validate their feelings and acknowledge their reality.
- Do express appreciation for their willingness to work through the pain.
- Do stay present and compassionate about the pain caused.
- Do provide a safe space for them to express anger (unless dangerous).
- Do call timeouts if things get too heated, using an agreed-upon protocol.
