Max Cooper:
I changed the rules of remixing for this project, & instead of using audio from the original piece, I imagined what could happen if Joep was in my studio playing my synths, instead of playing his piano. Each piano note was converted to synth notes & then I set about becoming an orchestrator of Joep's hypnotic "Hanging D". It was nice to discover that hiding in there in his beautiful stripped back piano piece was a synth epic crying out for hugeness. 

The whole thing turned into a contrasting of emotions, from defeat to victory with the idealism of screaming Prophet & Moog oscillators hard panned for maximum width. I kept the whole mix & process simple & raw, following the minimalism of the original, but in electronic form. 
It was one of the most enjoyable remixes I've ever worked on, many thanks to Joep & Deutsche Grammophon for inviting me to be part of this beautiful project.

For the visual approach I wanted to find something similarly reduced & built on contrasts, & started chatting with the algorithmic artist Ksawery Komputery, who had the great idea of linking the constant flow of the musical structure with a constant flow of particles, which would tell a story via fleeting moments of image formation. 
Many thanks to Ksawery for the beautiful & intense visual experience & for creating something new from the code up, especially for the project.

I love Max' airy productions. He really has a way with sounds & his beautiful compositions are filled with hope. Deep stuff, brilliantly balancing darkness with light, very well crafted & intelligent! His work is very visual & I admire how he has embraced that side of his art. Always going the extra mile on creating jaw dropping symbioses of music & imagery. When I first encountered his music I knew one day I would ask him to do a remix for me. When the idea of ZERO came up, Max was first on the list to be invited to pour some of his magic onto Hanging D. The composition lends itself for an epic approach & epic is what we got from Max! He has rebuilt the piece from scratch keeping the composition intact yet completely translating it into his own sound world. I can't wait to hear this tune blast out of a massive PA at a festival this summer.

The visual approach to Max' rework of Hanging D is just incredible. Built with code, Ksawery Komputery paints us a retro-matrix type pixelated stream of consciousness that sucks you in & blurs the boundaries between future past & present.

Ksawery Komputery:
“Hanging D” puts me in a deeply nostalgic mood. The dense ticking calls to mind the passing time while the strong piano chords point to the different stages of life. The track reminds me of my phone’s gallery filled with tons of memories growing every day. It’s a completely new situation in history, since our great-grandfathers left us with just a few blurry photographs. The data we generate will remain as a substantial historical archive for future generations. It will grant posterity the chance to travel in time, browsing fast backwards through our lives. Inspired by the track, I focused on this idea of “data excavation” & attempted to visualize the feeling of this process.

I create my videos mostly through coding. This time I wanted to build the scenes with the rows of timelines, consisting of simple shapes (“pixels”) occurring as life events, constantly passing the screen to the left. I used my own pictures & movies that I felt were important to me (like “Talking Heads” by Krzysztof Kieślowski, 1980). The retro stylistic also fitted here for me, so I created the color palettes out of old computer games. The algorithmic transitions between the scenes refer to the progress of image/video processing techniques such as dithering, interlacing, caching, buffering, compression or noise reduction. In my work I’m interested in low resolution effects & exploring the limits of legibility.
