Bleach Bypass | Color Foundry© v1.0 DCTL Film Look Design

Before the Bleach Bypass
Primary correction was performed by adjusting exposure, white balance, and contrast as the technical foundation of the image. Subsequently, the Toe, Mids, and Shoulder values were worked on to define the tonal distribution in shadows, midtones, and highlights, refining the density and overall atmosphere of the scene. Printer Lights were applied to precisely control the color balance per channel, emulating the workflow of a photochemical lab, and the look was built on a Fujifilm Eterna 250D base emulsion. With the image technically and creatively resolved, the Bleach Bypass was applied as the final stage, increasing the contrast, desaturating the palette, and giving the scene its definitive dramatic character.

The Bleach Bypass applied in this production is not a preset or a generic emulation — it responds to a proprietary mathematical formula developed within the DCTL Color Foundry, calibrated to precisely control the degree of retention, tonal response and selective desaturation, guaranteeing a unique and exclusive cinematic result for each project.
The recommended genres for bleach bypass are war and survival films, psychological thrillers and neo-noir, dark character dramas, dystopian and post-apocalyptic films, atmospheric horror, and immersive documentaries.

War and survival films are where extreme desaturation communicates brutality and exhaustion without needing to emphasize it in the script. In psychological thrillers and neo-noir, the look intensifies shadows, flattens light, and generates a latent tension that the viewer absorbs before any action occurs on screen. Dark character dramas—stories of addiction, abuse, or emotional breakdown—benefit because the process strips the frame of any residual glamour and anchors the protagonist in an uncomfortable and inescapable reality. In dystopian and post-apocalyptic films, the effect is almost literal: a scorched world, with color removed as if civilization had consumed it along with everything else. Atmospheric horror with sustained tension—not jump scares—creates the feeling that color itself is fading along with the character's sanity. Finally, in the subtly applied immersive documentary, he eliminates the digital cleanup that distances the viewer and restores to the material the visual weight of auteur cinematography.
