On 4 April 1979, former Pakistani Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was hanged by the General Zia-ul-Haq regime for killing.

In his book Bhutto Kay Aakhri 323 Din (The Last 323 Days of Bhutto), Lt Col Rafiuddin, who was deputed inside the jail for over 10 months to keep an eye on him, details the deposed PM's last moments.

Rafiuddin has chillingly described Bhutto’s reaction when his execution order was read out to him, hours before the hanging. Pakistani daily Dawn quotes from the lieutenant colonel’s account:

I did not see any sign of panic on Mr Bhutto’s face while the jail superintendent was reading out the order. Instead, I could see that he was quite calm, relaxed, and had a smile on his face.

According to Rafi ud Din, Bhutto had trouble sleeping that night and couldn't draw up a will owing to his disturbed state of mind. He even burnt the piece paper on which he had earlier penned down a will. When the jail superintendent later came to his cell, he found him lying motionless on a mattress.

Dawn cites the book to recount the final couple of minutes leading up to the former PM’s execution.

All present there stood in silence... When the clock struck four minutes past two in the morning, the executioner whispered something into Bhutto’s ear and pressed the lever. Bhutto’s body fell about five feet; it remained in that position for half an hour. A doctor then checked Bhutto and pronounced him dead.

With this, Bhutto’s exceptional and dramatic life came to an abrupt end. He was hanged for the alleged killing of Nawab Mohammad Ahmad Khan, belying expectations that his stature would help him escape the noose.

His hanging also cut short his impressive and stormy political career. As PM, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto had a successful and turbulent stay in office, during which he laid the foundation of Pakistan's nuclear programme.

Why was Zulfikar Ali Bhutto hanged by Gen. Zia ul Haque? What was the specific charge brought against him for which he was hanged? Was the charge true, or just politically designed to get rid of Bhutto?

He was initially charged with conspiracy to killing Ahmed Raza Kasuri, and the killing of Kasuri's father.

Masood Mehmood, Bhutto's general of the Federal Security force, testified after a few months in a Pakistani prison that Bhutto had given the orders. Four assassins also admitted to having had the orders before they performed the act. ( One said that he had given testimony after he had been tortured by his imprisons).

He was found innocent of the killing but not of the conspiracy charge.
He was given the Death sentence. The only one that could have changed the sentence to life imprisonment was General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.
The paperwork was done and sent to him. He would later claim that the forms had been misplaced and therefore didn't reach in time.

A lot of speculation has always been around that the CIA had orchestrated the whole stage and that Zia-ul-Haq was their puppet. It is not very far fetched as Bhutto was clearly a socialist hanging towards Russian empathies and was pursuing the nuclear capability of Pakistan.
The whole play looked amazingly a lot like what happened to Salvador Allende in Chili thanks to the CIA.

A former U.S. attorney general and Human rights activist, Ramsey Clark, quoted that:

"I do not believe in conspiracy theories in general, but the similarities in the staging of riots in Chile and in Pakistan are just too close, Bhutto was removed from power in Pakistan by force on 5 July, after the usual party on the 4th at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, with U.S. approval, if not more, by General Zia-ul-Haq. Bhutto was falsely accused and brutalized for months during proceedings that corrupted the Judiciary of Pakistan before being murdered, then hanged. As Americans, we must ask ourselves this: Is it possible that a rational military leader under the circumstances in Pakistan could have overthrown a constitutional government, without at least the tacit approval of the United States?".
