Issue Highlights May Nahai May 2023
It was a pleasure to see so many of you in Miami Beach at our annual meeting. Welcome to the May issue of ASJ. My selections are all international articles including a Review Article from the Breast Surgery section with a Commentary, an Original Articles from the Body Contouring section with a Commentary, and an Original Article from the Cosmetic Medicine section. Don’t miss the 3 international translated abstracts this month in French, Portuguese, and Spanish and next month in Turkish, Korean, and Chinese. I invite you to listen to this month’s Podcast Series from the Rhinoplasty section: “An Anatomic Analysis of the Bony Vault: From the Perspective of Osteotomy in Rhinoplasty.” I also encourage you to listen to the monthly ASJ Open Forum podcast series here. I’ll see you next month and thanks for joining our conversations on Instagram in ASJ and ASJ Open Forum.
Read BIA-ALCL Epidemiological Findings From a Retrospective Study of 248 Cases Extracted from Relevant Case Reports and Series: A Systematic Review
Authors: Fabio Santanelli Di Pompeo, MD, PhD; Demosthenes Panagiotakos, PhD; Guido Firmani, MD; and Michail Sorotos, MD, PhD here: https://academic.oup.com/asj/advance-article/doi/10.1093/asj/sjac312/6849963?login=true
Read the Commentary by: Mark W. Clemens, MD, MBA, FACS https://academic.oup.com/asj/advance-article/doi/10.1093/asj/sjad004/6979911
In this international Review Article from Italy Dr. Fabio Santanelli Di Pompeo and co-authors say the epidemiologic picture BIA-ALCL is unclear due to a lack of high-level evidence, and found that macrotextured implants in older patients and those with BRCA1/2 and TP53 mutations should be reconsidered since they’re associated with early disease onset. A Commentary by Dr. Mark Clemens elucidates these findings, reminding us that as each patient’s clinical history is different, and the final decision for prophylactic explantation must take into account unique surgical risks and comorbidities, He advises patients should continue to monitor and report back to their surgeon with any abnormal breast findings since though rare, disease has still occurred years after total capsulectomy.
Body Contouring
Description of a Novel Web-Based Liposuction System to Estimate Fat Volume and Distribution
Authors: Robert Harutyunyan, MSc; Mirko S. Gilardino, MD, MSc, FRCSC, FACS; Yichen Wu; Sean D. Jeffries, MSc; and Thomas M. Hemmerling, MD, MSc, DEAA
Commentary by: Pat Pazmiño, MD
This international Original Article from Canada by Drs. Robert Harutyunyan and colleagues looked at SAT-Maps for preoperative liposuction planning, a web-based software that objectively simulates fat distribution and measures safe liposuction volume. The software represents a cost-efficient, accessible, and user-friendly system offering clinically accurate 3D virtual simulations. A Commentary by Dr. Pat Pazmino indicates that because the fascial layers and the subcutaneous spaces are relatively consistent in a specific anatomic area, it may be possible for the user to set the fat safety assumption at the depth of the superficial fascia and build a heat map that could accurately describe the fat within the deep subcutaneous space alone, and, if integrated with existing 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional imaging programs may offer patients a more accurate view of postoperative results.

Cosmetic Medicine
In Vivo Investigation of the Biostimulatory and Rejuvenating Effects of Small-Particle Cross-Linked Hyaluronic Acid Injections in Photoaged Human Skin
Authors: Daniel Meng-Yen Hsieh, MD; Xuechan Bi, MD; Shaomin Zhong, MD, PhD;
and Yan Wu, MD, PhD
This International Original Article from China by Dr. Daniel Meng-Yen Hsieh and colleagues found that intradermal microinjections of small-particle cross-linked hyaluronic acid can stimulate collagen production and other extracellular matrix components, may restore the structural integrity of dermal microenvironment, and can be considered an effective method for skin rejuvenation.
