Petit Mamady Keita - Kawa (Conakry, December 2011)

This is the rhythm Kawa played for a Malinke wedding in Conakry. Kawa is the name of the smaller of the two masks and the rhythm and mask come from the Sankaran region of Guinea. The village of Faranah is very famous for its Kawa. The other mask seen dancing here is, I believe, called Wolo or Woloba. I don't have any information about it. I doubt that in a traditional context the two masks would be seen dancing together, it's just the result of cultural blending in the capital, to make the fete more spectacular!
The main soloist is Petit Mamady Keita. He is available to give lessons in Conakry. I can personally recommend him as one of the best teachers I have ever had, for all levels form beginner to professional. His number is +224 66107058
