Gamify your success at work

The way to get ahead at work might not be what you think.

I was always told that if I worked hard and dedicated myself to a job, I would be rewarded. That is very much not the whole story, or how it actually plays out a lot of the time.

This will differ from business to business and industry to industry, but it can be more about who you know rather than what you know.

In general, you can stand out and show you have leadership potential by speaking up, taking action, and providing innovative suggestions, but that doesn't necessarily guarantee you a promotion.

Some companies withhold promotions from their best employees so they can keep them at a lower level doing tons of work.

Having said all of this, still be realistic with your timeline; getting a pay rise or promotion is not likely to happen in the first 6 months.

But if after two years your efforts haven't been recognised and they are not willing to increase your salary, ask for a title upgrade. This costs them nothing.

Look for job titles on Glassdoor, LinkedIn, and Indeed that pay well above your current role, but match your responsibilities. Then work under that title for another 3-6 months before applying for new jobs. At that point you can leverage your work experience and title for a newer bigger position at a company that will hopefully value you more.

It can be hard out there, but you are doing the best you can, keep going!!
