How we climbed Eldfell Volcano, yesterday on Westman Islands, Iceland. June 18, 2021. On June 17-18 we visited Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar in Icelandic), archipelago in the Atlantic ocean to the south of Iceland, that consists of 14 Islands but only one of them Heimaey (Home Island, if translated) is inhabited. Westman Islands are reachable by ferry from mainland Iceland (from the Port of Landeyjarhöfn). The ferry goes many times a day forth and back and it is only 30 min sailing time. Westman Islands are one of the most beautiful parts of Iceland, also the warmest, home to millions of puffins and paradise for birdwatchers.

Vestmannaeyjar means the Islands of Western Men. Western Men (Vestmenn) was the ancient Viking name for the Irishmen, while the Eastern Men (Austmenn) were the Vikings themselves.
