DESCRIPTION:

Trimming a beard can be a difficult thing to get right. Most of us learn through our mistakes over the years, but that can be a very, very painful process.

In order to help YOU avoid costly beard trimming mistakes, I wanted to outline some of the things I've found to be helpful in getting a great beard trim from home, OR to help you direct a barber to give you a great beard trim.

1. Style your beard before you trim

You never want to trim your beard when you first wake up and you have crazy bed beard, nor do you want to trim your beard when it's not styled the way you go about it every day.

By putting beard products in your beard first, it'll tame the flyaways and keep your beard a bit tighter. This will truly show you what you need to trim away to get the perfect beard style you desire.

2. Treat your beard like a hedge

When it comes to beard trimming, you want to work from the outside and trim away any hairs that are sticking out or growing past the bulk of your beard.

3. Scissors or beard trimmer?

This really comes down to what you are most comfortable with. If you ware just getting started, I recommend using scissors at first. These are a much more precise tool which allow you to take off a single hair at a time if you want. Same principle though, work form the outside like a hedge.

4. Top line, back line and neck line

When it comes to shaping your beard into the beard style you desire, there are 3 main lines you need to shave or trim in.

The top line: this line essentially connects your sideburn to your mustache. The idea here is to keep it as high as naturally possible. Trim only the hairs that are above the bulk of your beard to bring your beard to a uniform hedge.

Back line: This is the line that runs off the back of your sideburn. I like to run this line naturally down and not too far forward into the beard. This line may be the hardest to get on your own. When I trim my own beard, I find it helpful to pickup a cheap hand mirror from your local store and use it to see the line a bit easier. Use your trimmers and trim away the hairs growing towards the back of your head!

The neck line: This line is probably the most often "gone wrong" that we see. You do not want to trim your beard on your jawline. You need your neck hairs to really give you the bulk and fullness as your beard grows out. Trim your beard where your head connects to your neck, typically right at or just above your adams apple.
