Serial Instinct – Through an OPP Investigative Lens Part 3

In the final video of our three-part series, we look behind the scenes of the investigation when there’s a confession and very little evidence. When health-care professional Elizabeth Wettlaufer walked off the street and confessed to killing her patients, what happened next and how did police deliver this news to the victims’ families? Breaking tragic news to families is always difficult for officers, but this case was unique – families believed their loved ones had passed away naturally.

Wettlaufer is serving a life sentence after her 2017 conviction on eight counts of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

In July, a public inquiry examining the case issued a report with 91 recommendations aimed at preventing such crimes in the future.

We take you through the challenges police faced in the most prolific health-care serial killer case in Canadian history.

Future Series
The Serial Instinct video series is intended to help shed light on the OPP resources and techniques employed throughout investigations, as well as the challenges officers face in trying to bring justice to families. Next, the OPP investigative lens will focus on unsolved cases: What happens when a case goes cold and how do detectives attempt to get leads to uncover enough vital information to make an arrest?
