Syria: Funeral service for FM Walid Muallem held in Damascus

A funeral service for the late Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem was held in Damascus on Monday.

Groups of officials attended the service which had people carrying the deceased's casket through the streets towards a mosque where a prayer service was held.

Muallem died at the age of 79 in the early hours of Monday, after having served as a top diplomat for his country for the last 15 years, as reported by state media.

The cause of death remains unknown.

Muallem served as the Foreign Minister in Syria from 2006 up until his death and held the position of Deputy Prime Minister from 2012 until his passing.​
