Trump touts trade progress in China visit, but analysts note limited deliverables | ABS-CBN News

U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to China helped ease tensions with Beijing but produced few concrete agreements, analysts said on Friday (May 15).

Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, highlighting potential trade deals, including purchases of U.S. soybeans and Boeing aircraft.

China has agreed to buy 200 Boeing jets, with a potential for the order to rise to as much as 750 planes, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday, adding that the planes would have GE Aerospace engines.

The orders, if finalized, would mark Boeing's first major Chinese deal in nearly a decade, after the U.S. planemaker was largely shut out of the world's second-largest aviation market amid trade tensions between Beijing and Washington.

“The outcomes this time around pale in comparison,” said Ryan Hass of the Brookings Institution, noting the absence of large-scale deals seen during Trump’s 2017 trip.

Economist Sara Hsu said improved trade ties were “a step in the right direction,” but warned deeper differences remain as China expands ties with other partners.

Xi also emphasized Taiwan as a core issue, underscoring ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Analysts said both sides appeared focused on maintaining stability rather than securing breakthroughs, extending a fragile period of calm in U.S.–China relations.
