F6F Hellcat: Flying the "Brute"

The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a natural progression from the earlier F4F Wildcat. It was bigger. Heavier. Carried more guns and bombs. It had greater range and pilot protection. And its landing gear was ideal for harsh aircraft carrier operations. As such it was a workhorse of a fighter. Solid, not nimble. Reliable, not a racehorse. And it won lasting respect among those who flew it. The Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm took delivery of several squadrons worth late in the war. One operated in the Pacific aboard HMS Indomitable (mostly because of her unique split hangar heights). The remainder largely operated in the Indian Ocean, aboard Escort Carriers operating in the assault role against Japanese forces in Burma and Southeast Asia.
