Chennai: Former Speaker of Tamil Nadu legislative assembly and senior All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader P.H. Pandian and his son Manoj Pandian, a former legislator of the party, on Tuesday expressed suspicion over the death of the late chief minister J.Jayalalithaa.

Pandian said that the incidents that occurred—ahead of Jayalalithaa being admitted to Apollo Hospitals in Chennai—at her Poes Garden residence Veda Nilayam, where Sasikala continues to stay should be probed.

Claiming that it was an unnatural death, he said, “Investigation should be held to find out on who all were present at the residence with Jayalalithaa before she was taken to hospital on 22 September.”

Quoting media reports that claimed that Jayalalithaa was injured in a clash and was rushed to hospital to avoid suspicion, Pandian said, “I came to know that she was depressed and also collapsed at Poes Garden while someone pushed her. She was taken to hospital to avoid suspicion.”

The allegation comes a day after the Tamil Nadu government organized a press conference by doctors, who attended to Jayalalithaa before the former chief minister died on 5 December, to dispel the secrecy around her death.

Manoj Pandian, who was also the legal adviser, said that as per the bylaws of the party framed in 1972 when the party was floated, “only the cadres could elect a general secretary of the party. Sasikala is unfit to become the general secretary and has no authority to appoint functionaries or allot two leaves symbol”. He said that as per party rules, she is technically not qualified to be the general secretary.

P.H. Pandian reiterated that she is unfit to be the chief minister of the party. “When Sasikala was not even given a councillor’s post by Jayalalithaa, how could Sasikala become general secretary of the party.”

As dissent grows within the party against Sasikala, former AIADMK minister K.P. Munusamy on Monday slammed Sasikala for making a “backdoor entry” to the chief minister’s post. Despite being the “preferred choice” of Jayalalithaa, why did O.Panneerselvam make way for Sasikala? asked Munusamy.
