ADA Title II Deadline Extended | What State Agencies Must Do Now
On April 17, 2026, the DOJ pushed the ADA Title II web accessibility compliance deadline back by one year. State and local entities serving 50,000+ residents now have until April 26, 2027. Smaller entities and special districts have until April 26, 2028.
Most of the rules did not change. The technical standard didn't move. The scope didn't shrink.

The DOJ's Interim Final Rule (IFR) became effective April 20, 2026 and opens a 60-day public comment period through June 22, 2026. The deadline extension is real, but the underlying ADA obligation has existed for decades. Roughly 90% of public-facing entities are still out of compliance today, and ongoing DOJ settlements, screen-reader lawsuits, and contract clauses tied to WCAG 2.1 Level AA are not waiting for 2027.
In this video:
✅ The exact new deadlines by entity tier (50,000+ residents, under 50,000, special districts) and how to confirm yours
✅ What did NOT change: WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the scope across websites, mobile apps, and vendor-delivered content, and the narrow exceptions for archived content and undue burden
✅ Why Section 504, state-level laws, OCR complaints, and ADA Title III lawsuits keep moving regardless of the federal extension
✅ The 5 reasons strong public entities are not slowing down (audits take months, PDFs and video are the slowest gaps, procurement cycles eat 12 months, vendors are repricing now)
✅ A 5-step playbook for the next 60 days: rebaseline, prioritize public-impact content, keep procurement clauses intact, formalize governance, document progress
Taika Translations holds NASPO ValuePoint Contract #17972 and a GSA Schedule, and we work with state, county, municipal, and school district teams every day on accessibility, language access, and digital communications. If your entity needs a comprehensive accessibility audit and remediation roadmap before the new deadline, our team can build the workflow and handle the content remediation end-to-end.
