Protecting Hearing in High-Noise Work Environments: Know the Risks #hse #oilandgas #drillingsafety
**Protecting Hearing in High-Noise Work Environments: Know the Risks, Follow the Program**
Noise is a silent hazard. Whether it's the roar of **engines, compressors, pressure relief valves**, **mud pumps**, or **top drives**, excessive noise exposure on drilling and workover facilities can cause irreversible hearing damage. It's our collective responsibility to protect workers' hearing through robust **Hearing Conservation Programs (HCPs).**
**Common Sources of Hazardous Noise:**
* Engines and Compressors
* Mud Pumps
* Generators and Draw Works
* Top Drives and Centrifugal Fans
* Mixing Equipment
* Pressure Reduction Stations
* Pressure Relief Valves
**Occupational Exposure Monitoring:**
Noise levels must be measured between **80 to 130 dB** using dosimeters or sound level meters calibrated to ANSI S1.4 standards. Impulse noise (lasting less than one second) must not exceed **140 dB peak**.
**Exposure Guidelines (Without PPE Consideration):**
Examples from the exposure table:
* 8 Hours – 90 dB
* 4 Hours – 95 dB
* 1 Hour – 105 dB
* 15 Minutes – 115 dB
Any exposure above **85 dB TWA (8-hour average)** requires enrollment into a **Hearing Conservation Program**. Even if personnel use hearing protection, exposure assessments should be made without accounting for attenuation.
**Key Requirements Under the Program:**
* **Noise exposure monitoring** using calibrated instruments.
* **Enrollment of exposed personnel** when action limits are met.
* **Use of company-approved hearing protection devices (HPDs)** in noise hazard zones.
* **Audiometric testing**, **employee education**, and **communication of results**.
* **Supervisory enforcement** of PPE use and regular maintenance.
* **Periodic re-evaluation** whenever work conditions or equipment change.
**Let’s prioritize safe hearing practices on every site.**
Noise may be invisible—but its impact can be permanent.
**Protect your hearing. Protect your future.**
