As lyricist Ned Washington wrote “Green Dolphin Street supplied the setting”. Indeed, it does for this lesson! I am listening to Dave Young play bass lines behind guitarist Lenny Breau on this very song (“Live on Bourbon Street”). They are very tasteful bass lines! Go ahead! Beg, borrow, and steal from any and all known resources to make your bass lines more natural sounding, like a real bass player, and less guitar-predictable! First, start here with Ted’s bass lines! In the key of C, Cesar opens this lesson playing the bass line he worked out from the previous month’s lesson using V3 chords over the changes.

Here’s a brief summary:

1. Play the bass notes full value (legato), not too fast, or it ends up sounding like a march.
2. Ted plays bass with chords examples over the changes ||: Am7 | D9 :||
3. Ted offers two rhythmic examples on where to place the chords as the bass lines play.
4. Approach bass notes. Momentary open ghost notes.
5. The steady bass example. It is okay to stay on one pulsating note sometimes.
6. Ted plays his version over the changes ... and then adds big band horn riffs!
7. Ted plays it chord melody Latin style in the key of A.
8. A question answered on voice leading.
9. Ted plays chord melody on “Watch What Happens” Latin style.
10. Cesar observes Ted moving around the neck, descending and ascending.
11. Ted just bopping around with chord inversions! So Wes sounding!
