The rugged new automatic Mahindra Karoo 4x4, with its 2.2 litre turbo diesel has been making noises in the offroad/farming/game viewing scene of late, making serious inroads into the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger stranglehold on the Southern Hemisphere bakkie/pick-up market. It certainly wins on price, and keeps up on offroad ruggedness - with its low-range gearbox, automatic rear diff-lock and torquey engine. But can it compete on-road, in terms of functionality, technology, refinement and overall comfortable motoring? We take a trip around the beautiful Cape Peninsula to find out.
