Watch A Rare Signed Korean Screen Sell For 27 Times Its Pre-Sale Estimate

LONDON. NOVEMBER 8, 2023. Watch as a rare eight-panel Korean silk screen, attributed to Kim Deuk-Sin (1754-1822), a member of the Dohwaseo, the official painters of the Joseon court, sells for 27 times its pre-sale estimate, achieving an amazing £218,950, against an estimate of £8,000-12,000.

The screen depicts a banquet in honour of Guo Ziyi (697-781), a famed general of China’s Tang Dynasty (618-907). Very few examples of screens of the same topic remain today, with only around 47 found worldwide - scattered across major museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Palace Museum of Korea. These screens are mostly painted by unknown artists, with very few signed and stamped. The present lot is one such example, making it a standout piece.
