The Khanty people survive the Arctic tundra's harsh cold in a unique home in Russia's far north.

Khanty reindeer herders (along with the Nenets) are the indigenous people of Yamal, leading a nomadic lifestyle based on herding reindeer. They migrate northward: to the forest-tundra in winter and to the coast in summer. Yamal is home to the largest reindeer herd in the Russian Federation (over 730,000 head), a significant portion of which is privately owned.

Even in a snowstorm or bitter cold, a family of reindeer herders can erect a chum (tent) in 30 minutes. It is disassembled and transported on sleds from one place to another. Everyone works almost silently and in perfect harmony—everyone knows what needs to be done.
