Sturmanskie - Yuri Gagarin Watches

Craig Hester here with R2Awatches.com. When Yuri Gagarin became the first human to go into space, in 1961, he wore a Sturmanskie watch on his wrist. Today we will be talking about Gagarin, his watch, and the commemorative watches now being offered by Sturmanskie and R2A Watches.

The Sturmanskie watch company had been around since 1949, and soon became the official watch of the Russian Air Force. This was how Yuri Gagarin acquired his Sturmanskie- it was given to pilots, like him, upon completion of flight training school.

Sturmanskie tried to keep the commemorative watches as close to the original work by Yuri Gagarin as possible. The original watch Gagarin wore was 33 mm, which by today's standards is very small. Therefore, commemorative editions measure 40 mm. A nice touch is that the commemorative watches have the original Sturmanskie logo, which is a bit different from the logo they have today.

The commemorative watches have a 2609 movement, but it's important to note that its not the exact Poljot movement that was in Gagarin's watch. In the 1970s, Sturmanskie upgraded and improved the 2609 movement. It is still very close to the original movement.
