WHY OLD DIESELS ARE SO DANGEROUS

A vintage stationary diesel engine enters a catastrophic runaway state after unregulated lubricating oil bypasses the intake valves and fuels the combustion cycle.

The motor rapidly accelerates beyond its mechanical RPM limit as the governor fails to restrict the unintended fuel source within the cylinders. Internal friction and centrifugal forces generate extreme heat, leading to imminent structural failure of the connecting rods or crankshaft. Stopping a runaway event requires immediate restriction of the atmospheric air intake, as traditional fuel shut-off valves have no effect on an engine consuming its own internal oil.
