My Experience Purchasing a Used/CPO Tesla

We did it! We finally purchased a Tesla! Back in 2017 when I started to design my rooftop solar array it occurred to me that the possible combination of electric vehicles and solar could be amazing. When I designed my solar array I over sized it by 30% to accommodate a Nissan LEAF to handle my daily commute to work. When I got my tax rebate for installing the solar I used all that money to purchase a used 2013 Nissan LEAF for $7,800 and I’ve been happily using that ever since.

Back when I started researching which Electric Vehicle to purchase I recognized quickly that Tesla is by far the best option, but I compromised with the LEAF since it could be had for so cheap now and I was able to do so because my commute to work is relatively short. However, in order for me to be able to fully replace my family vehicle I decided a Tesla was the only viable option. Initially I planned on getting a 2012 Tesla Model S with the rear facing seats since it is the cheapest Tesla with the highest seating capacity and I decided my price I’d be willing to pay was around $30,000. Then as I continued to research the various years and features of the Model S I realized that the best compromise between price and features is the 2015 Model S 85D as that would get me into a more comfortable range of around 250 miles, plus I could get all wheel drive and autopilot 1.0. At the time those were still selling in the $50,000's so I just continued to research and save. The used prices continued to fall and by early 2019 they were getting into the mid $40,000 range. I decided that I’d now be willing to pay up to $40,000 to get my family into one due to it’s cheaper operational and maintenance costs as well as safety and enjoyment. This was nearly double what I’ve paid for any vehicle prior so I wasn't going to go higher just to get one sooner. I anticipated the price of the S85D to get down to my $40k strike price by around early 2020.

Then in mid April 2019 all of a sudden I found a metallic blue Model S listed for $42,000! I was excited because the prices were getting much closer to my strike price, then I went on with my day not thinking more of it than that. Around a week later I checked the listings again and that very same Model S was now listed at $39,700! I requested pictures of it and sent a message to my wife about it and went on with my work day. That evening we talked more about it, and then the next day was Saturday and I contacted Tesla and find out more details about having to pay sales tax in California (it was located in San Francisco) and that I could take delivery of it there. Finally that evening we decided to pull the trigger and I checked the listing to see if it was still there and it was now listed for $39,400! I immediately put down my $2,500 deposit and then began weeks of the most anticipation I’ve felt since I can’t remember when.

I'd considered trading in my old car and it took a while to get someone to talk to me about it, then they offered only 50% of it's trade-in value according to NADA and KBB. That's a joke and obviously I passed on that. Then after that several different people kept contacting me asking me to get the trade-in information into my Tesla account and I kept telling them to cancel the trade-in, and they kept not canceling it then someone else would bring it up.

The most frustrating element of this entire transaction was the MVPA. It took 3 attempts (4 versions total) to get one error fixed and it took days per version. Getting the cashiers check from my bank was depending on that document being accurate and the responsiveness of the Tesla delivery adviser was not great and even sent the "corrected" MVPA and it was identical to the prior incorrect version.

Scheduling the pickup day was difficult. I wanted to get it scheduled right away for a date 2 weeks away so I could purchase airfare (at a decent price) to fly out to pick it up and the delivery adviser insisted on not scheduling a pickup date until the vehicle had been transported from San Francisco to Fremont. That is a short distance and should easily fit within 2 weeks and the adviser should have gone ahead and scheduled a tentative pickup date. Instead I had to purchase more expensive airfare due to him. I also wanted to schedule a Fremont factory tour and nearly missed that opportunity due to him delaying the scheduling of the pickup. I got the last spots on the tour for the day and time that could work for me on my delivery day.
