Shorty (Lafayette) Gilbert has shared the stage with and supported such artists & legends as George Thurgood, Lil Johnny Taylor, Jimmy Reed, Homesick James, Hound Dog Taylor, Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, Sam Lay, Hubert Summlin, Detroit Junior, Chico Chism, Boston Black, BB King, Billy Branch, Louis Meyers, Big Walter Horton, John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thorton, James Cotton, Jimmy Dawkins, JR Wells and many many more.
While in the past mainly a sideman, in the last few years, Shorty has been showcasing his talents as a gifted singer, the authenticity in his voice puts him right up there with Muddy and the Wolf.
Shorty moved to Chicago in 1969 at the age of 18. He started gigging on bass with Homesick James, Eddie Clearwater and Kansas City Red. He's also backed up Little Johnney Taylor and Jimmy Reed. But by far the biggest feather in his cap is when Shorty was asked to join Howlin Wolf's band by the Wolf himself in 1974. He held that position until 1976 when the Wolf passed away. After that he joined Eddie Shaw's Wolfgang who he's played with for over 35 years, touring all over the world.
