Bruno Major - Regent's Park (Lyrics)

“I want to tell you the story behind ‘Regents Park,’ my favourite track from ‘To Let A Good Thing Die,’ and how I came to write a song with one of my all time heroes: George Bruns.

George Bruns is the veritable genius behind some of the most iconic Disney music from the 1950s, 60’s and 70’s (think: 101 Dalmatians, The Jungle Book, The Aristocats and Robin Hood.) The music from these films was profoundly formative for me as a child and continues to inspire me to this day.

The opening to ‘101 Dalmatians’ (1961) has Pongo the dog glumly pontificating on love as Roger, his songwriter owner, composes at the piano. The song being ‘written’ is ‘A Beautiful Spring Day’ (hence the chorus lyric) elegantly recorded for the film by George Bruns himself. In the scene, Roger and Pongo meet Perdita and Anita at the park where they each fall in love. I wrote ‘Regents Park’ one October in a leafy treehouse I was renting in Silverlake LA. At that time I had just gone through a particularly regrettable breakup and I sought to write an alternative (more relatable) ending to the story, where Anita takes Roger back to the park where they met, leaves him and breaks his heart. I wrote it ostensibly from the perspective of Roger, but it is of course somewhat autobiographical.

We approached Disney and incredibly they agreed to let me release the song, on the condition that I split the publishing with George Bruns. Can you imagine how it felt to have written a song posthumously with a musician I look up to so deeply! I like to think Mr Bruns would have approved of my words and of the record. Needless to say, it is a huge honour to be the person that got to articulate such an iconic melody.” — Bruno Major, 2021

♪ official lyrics ♪

I must have sent four hundred poems on the way you used to smile at me,
I used to write them for you daily but my thumbs are running dry lately.

No one wants to hear a song about the bitch that broke my heart,
I should have listened to my Mama,
she saw through you from the start.

But now we’re here in Regent’s park amongst the flowers and I wish it would rain,
Cos in the sun you look so lovely that I’m falling for you over again,
Since I have nothing left to say that will make you change your mind,
I’ll say goodbye on a beautiful Spring day.

It was a place not too dissimilar to this one where I first saw your face,
You look like home sat all alone, I should have found somebody cheaper to chase,
Tragically nobody told me how expensive you could be,
I lost more than money dear, you knocked the swagger out of me.

But now we’re here in Regent’s park amongst the flowers and I wish it would rain,
Cos in the sun you look so lovely that I’m falling for you over again,
Since I have nothing left to say that will make you change your mind,
I’ll say goodbye on a beautiful Spring day.
