The Viking Afterlife: From Hel to Valhalla (Norse Mythology Documentary)

A typical account of Norse afterlife involves one of two mythical realms. The first is the underworld of Hel, which is known for its connection to the gods Odin and Baldr. The second is Valhalla, the hall of the slain. Valhalla is Odin's home in Asgard, where he gathers warriors who have fallen in battle. His valkyries are responsible for selecting men to dwell in Odin's hall. While Hel and Valhalla are the primary visions of Norse afterlife, they are by no means the only afterworlds. The afterlife is complex, and sources reflect the beliefs of many different places and times. The preserved stories of Norse afterlife carried the beliefs of pre-Christian Scandinavian across the mythical universe - from Hel to Valhalla.
